MERV Ratings Explained

Understanding MERV Ratings

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) measures how effectively an HVAC filter captures airborne particles. The higher the MERV rating, the finer the particles the filter can trap. Choosing the right MERV filter ensures both clean air and efficient system performance.

MERV 1–4: Basic Protection

These entry-level filters capture large particles like dust, lint, and pollen. Best suited for systems where airflow is the top priority and air quality needs are minimal. Common in older HVAC systems and basic residential setups.

MERV 5–8: Standard Performance

A step up in efficiency, these filters trap dust mites, mold spores, and pet dander. Ideal for most homes and light commercial spaces, balancing air quality with energy efficiency.

MERV 9–11: Enhanced Filtration

Designed to capture finer particles like auto emissions, lead dust, and some bacteria. A great choice for households with allergies or light commercial facilities looking for stronger filtration without major system modifications.

MERV 12–13: Superior Air Quality

These filters stop very small particles, including smoke, smog, and many airborne bacteria. Suitable for hospitals, schools, and commercial buildings aiming to improve indoor air quality. Also a popular choice for residential customers wanting cleaner, healthier air.

MERV 14–16: High-Efficiency Filtration

Typically used in medical facilities, clean rooms, or labs. These filters capture nearly all airborne particles, including viruses. Due to high airflow resistance, they require HVAC systems specifically designed to handle them.

HEPA & Beyond (MERV 17+)

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters capture 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns. Essential in hospitals, surgical environments, and critical manufacturing, but generally not compatible with standard residential or commercial HVAC systems.

Choosing the Right MERV Rating

Every system is different. A higher rating isn’t always better if your system can’t handle the resistance. Need help deciding? Use our Filter Finder or contact our team for expert guidance.
